Product Description
This is more than a book; this is an experience- a chance to be a voyeur into the life of Jake Kimball, the newest potter in a three-hundred year old town in western Pennsylvania. This is Jake's sketchbook, and as you might imagine an artist's sketchbook to be, it is full of pictures, doodles, journal entries and other artistic enhancements. This book also comes with a built-in self-propelled movie, entitled "The Little Potter Makes a Bowl." (You provide the soundtrack). Jake, a soon to be college graduate stumbles upon an ad in an art magazine. The town of Niederbipp is looking for a new potter to replace, Isaac, the seventh potter in a long string of potters reaching back to 1717. For the past 8 years, Jake has dreamed of being a village potter. He applies for the job, despite his plans for the summer and to his surprise, is awarded the Pottery, an apartment and a vast collection of old pots. As Jake begins his work in the old studio, he becomes aware of a unique collection of mugs hanging from an overhead beam. These mugs hold the keys to unlocking Jake's undertstanding of the man he has come to replace. With the help of his new friend Amy, Jake begins to piece together the secrets of life Isaac lived by and shared with all who knew him. Fall in love with Niederbipp and its people as they remember Isaac. Explore the complexity of human nature and the yearning we all have for love, hope, truth, purpose and especially joy. Discovering Isaac is a series of tales within interconnected tales that all grow from the nurturing wisdom and love of a simple man who truly undestood the universal and eternal secrets that lead to a happy life. This if the first of three volumes. Volume 2 will be out in December 2009.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Terrific read, compelling tale(s)   March 24, 2009

I just finished reading Remembering Isaac by Ben Behunin. I'm still awash in the wonderful feelings left behind by the experience.

This is not an easy book to categorize, since it works on so many different levels. It's a delightfully crafted tale about a young man, Jake Bingham, who has the incredible good fortune to become part of a benevolent community, Niederbipp, PA, where the overwhelming majority of the people not only look out for each other, but they openly welcome complete strangers. Most have suffered the normal bumps and sometimes crushing blows common to the human experience, but have also experienced life's supreme joys. Each was blessed by the caring concern of Jake's predecessor, Isaac--the 7th potter in an uninterrupted line of village potters--who died several weeks before Jake arrived in town.

As a condition of his position as the 8th village potter, he must create Isaac's commemorative grave marker, a man he never met. He comes to know him as current and former villagers stop by the shop to share a cup of Isaac's trademark peppermint tea and watch Jake spin his wheel. Jake embarks on a voyage of discovery of life's lessons as they recount stories of their deceased friend and his good works.

The author is a full-time working potter who obviously knows his stuff. With a little help from the glossary in the back, by the end of the book you feel like you actually understand a little about the complexities of creating fine pottery. Behunin very skillfully uses pottery as a metaphor for life. The lessons learned just kind of soak in and soothe the soul.

There is also a touch of romance. As the newest and most eligible bachelor in town, Jake gets his share of dinner invitations from hopeful grandmothers. One of the young ladies catches his eye, and we are treated to an unusually insightful account of the sweet friendship as it progresses toward courtship.

Well-written, joyful, meaty (but not heavy-handed), with whimsical illustrations by the author sprinkled throughout, this is a compelling book that both delights and imbues wisdom in a most subtle way. I couldn't put it down...I can't wait for the sequel!

I really enjoyed reading this book, and I am looking forward to the sequels. The characters in the story are easy to relate to, while solid wisdom pops up throughout the volume inspiring me to become better. I have already recommended this book to several of my friends, and they love it too.

I just finished this book. It was fabulous! I ran over to my neighbors house and handed her the book-we love to swap good books. The book says that the author is a potter- I say he is an author! I can't wait for the second book to come out. In this book you will find the old world charm of people and places, humor, love, wisdom, true friendship and much more. The book came alive for me- I wish I could go to Pennsylvania and live with the characters and be their neighbors.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational and Wonderful!   January 29, 2010

Wow! This book could not have come at a more vital time in my life. I believe it was written just for me, to help me understand the death of my husband. However, I will share it with the rest of you too. (This is my favorite book and now I have added the second book, Discovering Isaac, to that list also, and can hardly stand the fact that I have to wait for the third one, Becoming Isaac, to be finished.) This is a must read and share book, we must all realize that one of the most important things to learn in life is how much God loves us and wants us to help each other. He doesn't care where we live, how much money we have, how weird we are, who we know or any of that other "stuff". Just know that He loves us. This story is told with wit and in such a way as to draw you in so you don't want to put it down.

This is the best feel good book that I have read in a long time. I just couldn't put it down. You want it never to end. I found it inspirational with many great messages that you want to savor. At the same time it was joyful and entertaining. This is a book I would want to give to those I love.
